WordPress Payment Gateway Plugin

A WordPress payment gateway plugin connects your website to a payment service provider so customers can pay by UPI, card, net banking or wallet without leaving your site. It adds the payment option to your checkout, sends the order amount to the gateway, and updates the order once the money is confirmed. On a WooCommerce store the plugin appears under WooCommerce → Settings → Payments; on a site without WooCommerce a shortcode-based button does the same job for a single product or fee.

For an Indian WooCommerce store, the official plugin of whichever gateway you hold an account with is the right choice — an unofficial or third-party bridge plugin is the usual cause of failed orders. Use a payment button plugin and place its shortcode on any page or post. Cashfree's Quick Button plugin, for example, renders a pay button from the shortcode [CFPB] with the product title, description and orderAmount supplied as custom fields — no cart, no product catalogue and no WooCommerce required. If you would rather install nothing at all, a payment link or a hosted payment page collects money with only a URL.

Yes. The plugin is published free in the WordPress.org plugin directory and there is no licence fee to install or use it. Installing and configuring the plugin takes 15 to 30 minutes and needs no code. The longer part is merchant approval: KYC review depends on how complete your documents are and whether your site carries the required policy pages. You can install the plugin and run sandbox test payments while KYC is still in progress.

You need your business PAN, bank account proof such as a cancelled cheque or statement, a registration document matching your entity type, your GSTIN if you are registered, and the signatory's Aadhaar-linked mobile for KYC. Your website is checked too — contact details, terms and conditions, privacy policy, refund and cancellation policy, shipping and delivery policy where you ship goods, and clear pricing. Missing policy pages are the most common reason an application is delayed.

Yes. Once the gateway plugin is configured, UPI appears as a payment option at checkout, including UPI intent on mobile — which opens GPay, PhonePe or Paytm directly — and QR for desktop shoppers. UPI is now the majority of online collection for most Indian small businesses, so it is worth confirming it is enabled and tested before launch.

Yes, and it is not optional. Your store must load over https:// before a gateway will approve it, and browsers now warn shoppers away from any page that asks for payment details without it. Almost every host includes a free Let's Encrypt certificate; enabling it is usually a single toggle in your hosting panel.

The payment confirmation did not reach WordPress — usually because the shopper closed the tab before being returned, or because a caching or firewall plugin blocked the return request. Exclude cart, checkout and account pages from caching, allow the gateway's return URL through your security plugin, and always check the gateway dashboard before treating an order as unpaid.

Yes. The Cashfree plugin supports refunds initiated from the WooCommerce order screen, for online payments and for cash-on-delivery orders, so you do not have to switch to the gateway dashboard to return money. The saved API credentials must be the same production pair that took the original payment.

Every redirect is a moment where a shopper on a slow mobile connection can lose confidence or lose the page, and keeping the payment inside your own branding measurably reduces abandonment.

Yes. The gateway attaches to WooCommerce itself, not to your theme or builder, so any Elementor, Divi, Astra or block-theme store that runs WooCommerce works the same way. If your site has no WooCommerce at all, use the shortcode payment button instead — page builders accept shortcodes in a text or shortcode widget.

Yes. Cashfree publishes 0% on domestic payment gateway transactions — UPI, cards, net banking and wallets — for merchants who sign up on or after 21 July 2026, on up to ₹20,00,000 of transaction value per month, running until 31 March 2027. The standard rate it replaces is 1.95%. Two conditions matter: volume above ₹20 lakh in a month is charged at the standard rate, and UPI must stay at a minimum 40% of your monthly transaction value or the offer is withdrawn. International cards, EMI and Pay Later are priced separately. Confirm the current terms on Cashfree's own charges page before signing up.

Yes, WooCommerce lets you enable several gateways and shoppers pick one at checkout. In practice most stores are better served by one well-tested gateway plus cash on delivery: every extra option is another integration to monitor, another reconciliation to do at month end, and one more choice slowing the shopper down.

Checkout stops working, so keep a second collection route ready — payment links, a hosted page or cash on delivery will keep orders flowing while you resolve it. Suspensions usually follow a mismatch between what your site sells and what the account was approved for, or missing policy pages, so keeping those accurate is the cheapest insurance available.
