UPI payment gateway — quick answer

Updated 20 August 2026

A UPI payment gateway lets a business collect UPI payments online with automatic confirmation, settlement into your bank account and proper records — unlike a personal UPI ID, which gives you none of those and risks the account being frozen on business volume. You can collect four ways: website checkout, payment links, dynamic QR and UPI AutoPay mandates for anything recurring; only the first needs a website. Setup means opening a merchant account and completing KYC with your business PAN, bank proof and registration document. UPI is the cheapest method to accept in India, standard settlement is T+1, and new merchants signing up from 21 July 2026 pay 0% up to ₹20 lakh a month until 31 March 2027.

Four ways to collect UPI, and who each one suits

Most businesses need one of these, not all four. Pick by how your customer actually reaches you.

UPI at online checkout

Built into your website or app through the gateway. Right for anyone with a cart — the customer never leaves your page, and UPI Intent hands them straight to their payment app on mobile.

Payment links

Send a link on WhatsApp, SMS or email. No website, no installation, nothing to build. This is how most shops and clinics start, and it stays useful even after you have a site.

Dynamic QR at the counter

A QR generated for the exact bill amount that confirms itself. Removes the daily ritual of squinting at payment screenshots and hoping they are real.

UPI AutoPay mandates

The customer approves once and agreed amounts are debited on schedule. For subscriptions, monthly fees, gold schemes and anything you bill repeatedly.

Personal UPI ID vs a merchant UPI gateway

Plenty of small businesses run on a personal UPI ID for years. Here is exactly what that costs you, beyond the fee you are saving.

What you needPersonal UPI IDMerchant gateway
Automatic payment confirmationNo — you check a screenshotYes, confirmed by the system
Settlement report for accountsNoYes, per transaction and per settlement
RefundsManual transfer backIssued against the original payment
Failed-payment protectionNone — screenshots are forged dailyDashboard is the record of truth
Link to a specific bill or orderNoYes, per link or dynamic QR
Account freeze risk on business volumeHighNone — it is a business account
Dispute and support deskNoneProvider support
CostFreeA small percentage per transaction

The frozen-account risk is the one people underestimate. Banks flag personal accounts showing business transaction patterns, and the money is inaccessible while it is reviewed — usually at the worst possible moment.

How to set up a UPI payment gateway

Five steps. Nothing here needs a developer if you start with links or QR.

  1. 1

    Open a merchant account

Sign up with a payment service provider and complete KYC using your business PAN, bank account proof, entity registration document and GSTIN where you have one. Approval turns on document completeness, not on how big your business is.

  2. 2

Get your bank account and PAN to match

The bank account you nominate for settlement must belong to the same entity as the PAN on the application. A mismatch here is the most common cause of settlements being held after the account is otherwise live.

  3. 3

    Choose how you will collect

Payment links and dynamic QR need nothing built and work from day one. A website checkout needs the gateway integrated — a plugin on WooCommerce or Shopify, or an API for a custom build.

  4. 4

Turn on UPI Intent and dynamic QR

UPI Intent hands mobile shoppers straight into their payment app with the amount filled in; dynamic QR carries the exact bill amount. Both are settings, not development work, and both measurably reduce failed and abandoned payments.

  5. 5

Test with a real ₹1 payment, then refund it

Pay yourself ₹1 from a real UPI app and refund it from the dashboard. That single test proves collection, confirmation, settlement and refund all work before a customer ever depends on them.

New merchants pay 0% on domestic UPI, card, net banking and wallet payments — up to ₹20 lakh a month, until 31 March 2027.

Getting more of your payments onto UPI

UPI is the cheapest method you can accept, so moving your mix towards it is the simplest way to cut what you pay — and the offer above requires UPI to stay at 40% of your monthly value.

  • Show UPI first at checkout, not below cards — the order of payment options moves the mix on its own
  • Enable UPI Intent so mobile shoppers are handed to their app instead of copying an ID
  • Offer a small prepaid discount for UPI, which is cheaper than the COD returns it replaces
  • Use dynamic QR at the counter so walk-in customers pay the exact bill without typing it
  • Put a UPI payment link in every invoice you send on WhatsApp
  • Use UPI AutoPay for anything you bill monthly, instead of chasing each payment

Why UPI decides what an Indian checkout costs

For most Indian businesses selling online, UPI is now the majority of collection by transaction count. That single fact changes how you should read a pricing page: a gateway quoting one blended rate across all methods is charging you card-level pricing on UPI volume, which is where the money quietly goes.

It also changes what a good checkout looks like. A card-first checkout designed for a Western audience asks an Indian mobile shopper to do the slowest thing available. Putting UPI first, with Intent enabled, is usually worth more in recovered conversions than any rate negotiation you will win in the first year.

The direction of travel matters too. RuPay credit card on UPI has pulled credit spending onto UPI rails, and UPI AutoPay has made recurring collection possible for businesses that could never get card mandates to work. A gateway account that supports all three — UPI, RuPay-on-UPI and AutoPay — covers where Indian payments are going, not just where they are.

UPI payment gateway — frequently asked questions

What is a UPI payment gateway?

A UPI payment gateway is a service that lets a business collect UPI payments online — on a website, an app, or through a link or QR — and confirms each payment automatically instead of the merchant checking a screenshot. It connects your business to the UPI network through a payment service provider, settles the money into your bank account, and gives you a record of every transaction. It is different from a personal UPI ID: a personal ID has no automatic confirmation, no settlement report and no refund facility, and using one for business volume risks the account being frozen.

How do I get a UPI payment gateway for my business?

Open a merchant account with a payment service provider, complete KYC with your business PAN, bank proof and registration document, and then either integrate the gateway into your website or start with a payment link that needs no website at all. Approval depends on document completeness rather than business size, and you can be collecting UPI within a few days. Cashfree currently offers 0% on domestic payment gateway transactions up to ₹20 lakh a month for merchants signing up from 21 July 2026, until 31 March 2027.

Is there a free UPI payment gateway in India?

There is no permanently free UPI payment gateway, but UPI is the cheapest method to accept in India and promotional zero-fee pricing exists for new merchants. Cashfree publishes 0% on domestic UPI, card, net banking and wallet transactions up to ₹20 lakh per month until 31 March 2027 for accounts opened on or after 21 July 2026, against a standard rate of 1.95%. Read the conditions: volume above the monthly cap reverts to the standard rate, and the offer requires UPI to be at least 40% of your monthly transaction value.

Can I use my personal UPI ID to collect business payments?

You can, but you should not once volume grows. A personal UPI ID gives you no automatic payment confirmation, no settlement report, no refund mechanism and no dispute support — and banks freeze personal accounts that show business-like transaction patterns, which leaves your money inaccessible exactly when you need it. A merchant UPI account through a gateway costs a small percentage and gives you confirmation, records for GST, and someone to call.

What is UPI Intent and why does it matter on mobile?

UPI Intent opens the customer's UPI app — GPay, PhonePe, Paytm — directly from your checkout with the amount already filled in, so they only approve it. The alternative, asking them to copy a UPI ID and switch apps manually, loses a large share of mobile shoppers at exactly the moment they were ready to pay. Since most Indian online traffic is mobile, enabling UPI Intent is one of the highest-return settings on a checkout.

What is the difference between static QR and dynamic QR?

A static QR is one printed code for your business — the customer scans it and types the amount themselves, which invites typing errors and gives you no automatic link to the bill. A dynamic QR is generated per transaction with the exact amount already in it, confirms itself, and ties the payment to the specific bill or order. For a counter, dynamic QR removes the daily job of checking screenshots against the till.

How long does UPI settlement take?

The standard settlement cycle for a UPI payment gateway in India is T+1 — money reaches your bank account one working day after the transaction. Same-day or instant settlement is available as a paid feature at every provider. The customer's payment itself is instant and confirmed in seconds; it is only the transfer to your bank that follows the settlement cycle.

Are UPI charges lower than card charges?

Yes, materially. UPI is the cheapest online method to accept in India, followed by net banking and debit cards, with credit cards, EMI and international cards costing more. RBI has mandated zero MDR on UPI and RuPay debit for merchant transactions in specified categories, which is a large part of why UPI is cheap. If your customers pay mostly by UPI, per-method pricing will cost you less than a single blended rate.

Can I accept UPI payments without a website?

Yes. A payment link works over WhatsApp, SMS or email and needs nothing installed — you send a link, the customer pays by UPI, and you get a confirmation. A hosted payment page and a dynamic QR do the same job for a counter or a form. This is how most shops, clinics and coaching centres start collecting online, long before they build a website.

What is UPI AutoPay and can I use it for subscriptions?

UPI AutoPay lets a customer approve a recurring mandate once, after which agreed amounts are debited automatically on schedule — the UPI equivalent of a card mandate. It suits subscriptions, monthly fees, gold savings schemes and any business collecting the same amount repeatedly. The customer sees and approves the mandate, and can cancel it from their UPI app, which is why adoption is higher than card mandates in India.

Do I need a GST number to accept UPI payments as a business?

Not necessarily. GST registration is required when your turnover crosses the threshold for your state and business type, not because you accept UPI. Gateways ask for a GSTIN where you have one and onboard unregistered small businesses too, subject to their category rules. What you always need is a business bank account, PAN and matching KYC documents.

What happens if a UPI payment fails but money is debited?

The amount is auto-reversed to the customer, usually within a few hours and by regulation within a defined window. As the merchant you see the transaction as failed and should not release goods against it — a debit on the customer's side is not a credit on yours. Your gateway dashboard is the record that matters, not the customer's screenshot, which is the single most common way small merchants get defrauded.

Can I accept international payments through UPI?

UPI is a domestic Indian system, so cross-border acceptance generally runs through international cards rather than UPI, at higher published rates near 3%. NPCI has extended UPI acceptance to selected countries for Indian travellers and NRIs, but for selling to overseas customers you should plan on international card acceptance, which the same gateway account can enable.

How do I reconcile UPI payments with my bills?

Use dynamic QR or payment links generated per bill, so each payment arrives already tagged to an order, and take the settlement report from your gateway dashboard rather than reading your bank statement. Reconciling from a bank statement is where hours disappear: a settlement is a batch of many transactions net of fees, so it will never match individual bills line by line.

Start collecting UPI properly

Confirmed payments, settlement reports your accountant can use, and refunds you can issue — instead of screenshots. New merchants pay 0% on up to ₹20 lakh a month until 31 March 2027.
